Scar Revision

Scar Revision for Residents in Tampa

scar-revisionFor men and women alike, having a prominent scar on your face can sometimes be detrimental to your self-esteem. No matter how many times other people assure you that you are handsome or beautiful, that scar is the only thing you can see. At the Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, our plastic surgeon Dr. John Roach can perform a scar revision procedure to decrease the wound and help you feel better about your appearance.

Whether you suffered a burn after a car crash in Trinity, FL, or you fell off your bike and badly scratched your face in Wesley Chapel, we have various scar revision methods we can use to help reduce the appearance of your scar. Those scar revision techniques include:

  • Injectable treatments—usually used to fill concave scars, this method typically lasts about three months to a year depending on the severity of your scar. This temporary treatment must be repeated for the results to last. Injections may consist of steroidal-based compounds which help to reduce the formation of collagen and alter the size, texture, and look of scar tissues.
  • Topical treatments—these include the use of gels, external compression, and tapes. They help to close and heal wounds as well as reduce the chance that your skin will develop an odd pigment in the scarred area. They are also great for helping patients to heal after scar revision procedures.
  • Surface treatments—these include dermabrasion, chemical peel solutions, skin-bleaching agents, and more. Surface treatments like these are often used in cosmetic scar revision procedures. They help to improve skin coloring and smooth surface irregularities by mechanically removing the top layers of the scar, or reconfiguring the tissue.
  • Layered closure—this scar revision method is used mostly when the scar removal extends to the tissue below the skin’s surface. For the first inner layer, Dr. Roach will perform a closure with non-removable sutures below the skin’s surface. This process will continue until the plastic surgeon has reached the surface layer. There are various scar revision techniques you can used for a layered closure such as flap closure procedures, which repositions the scar so it is less noticeable while also helping to improve flexibility where the scar is limiting mobility.

Dr. Roach can also work with pharmaceutical tissue substitutes, skin grafts and more to help decrease your scar. The degree of improvement greatly depends on the severity of your scar, as well as its size, and type. Your plastic surgeon will analyze your scar and recommend the best scar revision method for you.
