breast-enhancement-faqSo you’ve made the exciting choice to undergo breast enhancement surgery. Right now you may be asking yourself a variety of questions: is this safe? Will I look normal? How long will it take to recuperate from my breast enhancement? Tampa residents look to Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s surgeon, Dr. John Roach, for answers to their questions, since he is one of the most qualified and trusted plastic surgeons in the Tampa area.

Our staff understands that your breast enhancement could be a life changing experience, and we are here to help you comprehend what will happen during your procedure and what to expect months after you’ve had your operation. The following are a few frequently asked questions about breast enhancement our Tampa Bay patients have had in the past:

How and where will the breast implants be inserted?

  • Gel implants require a bigger incision than saline implants. The common incision sites are under the arm, around the nipple, or within the breast fold. Dr. Roach will discuss each of these in detail and guide you on which incision site would work best for your needs.
  • The implants are usually place either partially under the pectoralis major muscle, or on top of that muscle yet below the breast glands. Dr. Roach will also evaluate the pros and cons of these placements and help you decide which would benefit you the most.

What are the different types of breast implants used in breast enhancement surgery?

  • You can either have saline or silicone implants. The saline implants are made up of a salt water solution similar to the liquid found in your body. The silicone implant is filled with cohesive silicone gel that provides a natural looking appearance to your breasts. While the silicone implants are inserted filled, the saline implants are filled with solution after they’re inserted in your body.

What happens during a breast enhancement operation?

  • Dr. Roach will create a pocket behind each of your breasts, and place a silicone or saline implant in one of the three possible incision areas. He can also perform a dual plane breast enhancement where he would place the implant partially above and below your pectoralis muscle.

What happens after the breast enhancement?

  • Your breasts may be sore for a few days after your breast enlargement, and you may experience some swelling and sensitivity for about a month or more after the surgery. The skin around your breasts may feel tight as it adjusts to the implants. You may need to wear a special postoperative bra or bandage as you heal. You should be able to return to work after a few days.

What are some potential side effects of breast enlargement surgery?

  • Bleeding, asymmetry, capsular contracture or infections are possible. Still, you should start to heal 5 to 10 days after your breast enhancement; full healing should take place in about six weeks.
