Nipple Reconstruction

Nipple Reconstruction for Breast Reconstruction Patients

nipple-reconstructionNipple reconstruction is often the last phase of breast reconstruction surgery for patients who have undergone a mastectomy. This final procedure gives the breast a more aesthetically pleasing and natural appearance, and many women find that this greatly improves their self confidence. At the Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. John Roach, a highly respected breast reconstruction and breast augmentation surgeon, performs breast reconstructive surgeries and nipple reconstruction for patients from Clearwater, Tampa, Lutz, and elsewhere throughout Florida.

What happens during a nipple reconstruction procedure?

Dr. Roach must first create a “nipple mound” by taking skin from a local flap of the reconstructed breast. Next, the patient can choose to have an areola tattooed on, or Dr. Roach can reconstruct the areola using skin from another part of the patient’s body. The abdomen, inner thigh, and crease of the buttocks are the most common areas from which this skin is taken.

The chosen method of areola recreation usually depends on whether the original breast reconstruction involved a surrounding skin graft, as well as the tissue quality of the reconstructed breast. In some cases, the surgeon may also choose to enhance the nipple projection by using fat grafts or a filler like Dermis.

Surgical Concerns and Recovery

Nipple reconstruction is performed as an outpatient surgery, after the patient has fully healed from the initial breast reconstruction. There are little risks involved, but the success of the surgery depends largely on aftercare. Following the surgeon’s post-operative instructions can help ensure proper healing and natural-looking results.
