The Best Time to Get a Mommy Makeover

Being a mother is a wonderful blessing, but it also comes with some sacrifices. Those sacrifices start when you first become pregnant, and some of them can wreak havoc on your body. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can have a detrimental effect on your body’s shape and elasticity. While diet and exercise can help you get back the figure you had before childbirth, sometimes a little extra help is necessary.

The Mommy Makeover is a group of cosmetic procedures that can be done in stages or all at once to reverse the effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding on the body. The most common cosmetic surgical procedures that are done as part of the Mommy Makeover include: (more…)

Most Common Body Contouring Areas

When you think of body contouring, you probably think about procedures like a tummy tuck or liposuction. However, there are many areas of your body that you can have contoured besides your abdomen. Here are some of the most common body contouring areas.

Fat accumulation in the upper thighs is difficult to beat, especially for women. Even if you manage to lose weight, it is likely that your thighs will remain stubbornly large. A thigh lift can trim away the excess fat and skin so that your thighs are much more proportionate to your body. (more…)

Breast Lift or Augmentation? Making the Decision

Breast Augmentation Cheval FLIf you have lost volume in your breasts, you are not alone. Many women lose volume in their breasts after pregnancy and childbirth, especially if they breastfeed for a year or more. Breasts can also sag due to weight loss or as a natural part of aging.

The automatic response for most women who don’t like their breasts is to get breast augmentation, but that may not be the best solution for you. For many women a breast lift is sufficient to give them the look that they want. Here’s what you need to know to make a decision. (more…)

Who Can Perform a Mohs Surgery?

There are several different types of skin cancer, but most of them are not seriously life threatening, especially if they are caught early. For several types of skin cancer, the treatment calls for carefully removing the diseased skin until clean margins are obtained. This is called a Mohs surgery, named after the doctor who developed the technique.

If your primary doctor recently discovered that you may have skin cancer, they have probably mentioned the Mohs procedure to you. But who can perform the Mohs procedure? It takes a specially trained doctor and a pathologist. Generally, the only doctors who perform Mohs surgeries are dermatologists. This is not to say that other doctors can’t perform the procedure if they are trained and experienced. (more…)

Common Cosmetic Procedures After Extreme Weight Loss

If you have lost 100 pounds or more, you have accomplished something wonderful for your health. You should be very proud of yourself, but you may still be lacking self-confidence. Often when people lose a significant amount of weight it results in flaps of skin, stubborn fat that will not go away with diet and exercise, or loose skin. Sometimes that is more devastating to self-esteem than the weight itself.

Thankfully, there are many cosmetic procedures that you can get to eliminate that extra skin and fat and improve your self-confidence. Here are a few of those procedures. (more…)

Why You Should Have a Breast Lift

Have you considered having surgery on your breasts? You may be considering having a reduction to make them smaller or an augmentation procedure to make them larger. In either case, you may not need to go to these drastic measures. In many situations, a breast lift can give you the look and feel you desire without more invasive and complex surgery.

You see, one of the things that makes women want to have breast augmentation is that their breasts have lost volume, either due to weight loss, childbirth, breastfeeding, or due to another medical condition. When breasts lose volume, they can appear stretched and flat, and you may think you need implants to regain shape and firmness.

However, a breast lift will handle this problem just fine, without placing implants. A breast lift is done by making incisions around the breast to lift it, tighten the skin around it, and move the substance of the breast higher. The nipple can also be moved into a more suitable position after the breast has been lifted.

Another problem that many women have is that they feel they need a breast reduction because their breasts are hanging down and seem large but flat. This is another situation in which a breast lift may be appropriate. A breast lift and reduction have about the same recovery times, however.

What You Need to Know About the Mommy Makeover

The Mommy Makeover is a special package of cosmetic surgery procedures that are designed to bring your body back to where it was before you had children. Having children is a huge sacrifice, and one of those sacrifices is your body’s shape and size. Just as you can counterbalance some of the other sacrifices you make for your children, so too can you do something about this sacrifice.

The Mommy Makeover is usually made up of one or more of the following procedures: (more…)

Botox vs. Fillers

Whether you’ve noticed wrinkles beginning to form around your eyes, or sagging skin in general, faces inevitably change over time. With a seemingly infinite number of anti-aging treatments on the market, it can be difficult to know which option is best for you.

Fillers, and neuromodulator injections like Botox allow you to delay the signs of aging for a long time, but which is right for you?

What is Botox?

A brand name for a type of neuromodulator, Botox is a popular treatment for minor lines and wrinkles. It works by temporarily preventing the affected underlying muscle from moving. Botox is most commonly used to treat wrinkling that is caused by muscles that are used to create facial expressions – typically in the upper areas of the face. Botox is approved by the FDA for the treatment of crows-feet, frown lines in between the eyebrows, and forehead lines.

As with any medical procedure, there are factors to consider before receiving Botox. You should avoid neuromodulators of any sort if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, are known to be allergic to Botox, or have an underlying muscle or nerve condition.

What are Fillers?

As opposed to neuromodulators which affect how the muscle works, fillers are substances that are injected to replace lost volume in the affected areas. Where Botox is most effective where muscle contractions occur, fillers are best for lines that are present at all times – even when muscles aren’t contracting. One of the most common applications for fillers is around the mouth to treat nasolabial folds – or laugh lines. They can also be used to re-contour the face – especially around the cheeks and lips.

If you have allergies to any component of a filler, including lidocaine which is often mixed with fillers, avoid them altogether. Those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an infection in the injection area should also stay away from fillers.

Tightening Your Tummy After a Baby

Having a baby is transformative, changing your life forever. It’s also a body-altering event, often with lasting impact. For most women, these changes include loose skin around the lower tummy, stretch marks, and general abdominal sagging. With diet and exercise, you can often minimize your new tummy pouch. But these efforts may not be enough to completely reverse the effects that pregnancy has had on your body.

Long-Term Effects of Pregnancy on Your Tummy

Your belly expands rapidly when you’re carrying a child. This usually leads to stretch marks. They may fade over time, but they rarely disappear completely, making these marks one of the most common long-term effects on your tummy after giving birth.

Diastasis recti is another potential consequence of a fast-growing tummy. Pregnancy stretches your abdominal connective tissue and often pushes your stomach muscles apart. This is what causes a droopy tummy, a protruding belly and decreased muscle tone for months after delivery, despite healthy eating and dedicated exercise. Many new moms deal with excess skin and urinal incontinence, as well. If these are some of the issues you’re struggling with after pregnancy, a tummy tuck offers an effective solution.

How a Tummy Tuck Can Help Restore Your Body After Pregnancy

Abdominoplasty, commonly called a tummy tuck, surgically tightens and contours your lower abdomen. Our surgeon will remove the extra skin you’ve developed over your pregnancy and the excess fat in the lower tummy area. Any stretch marks that are in that specific area of your belly will be gone, as well.

After your procedure, not only will your tummy have a firmer, more toned appearance, you are likely to feel better. Being a mom is hard work. Regaining your pre-pregnancy body can improve your self-esteem and your mood. Minimizing or completely eliminating incontinence is another bonus.

If you’d like to learn whether you’re a good candidate for a tummy tuck, contact Bayside Center Plastic Reconstructive Surgery to schedule a consultation.
